Description

OVERVIEW – CRITICAL COMPRESSION SPRING FOR BUFFER RETAINER AND BUFFER SYSTEM FUNCTION

The AR-15 LPK Buffer Retainer Spring is the small compression spring that powers your buffer retainer, ensuring your buffer and buffer spring stay captured in the buffer tube when you open your rifle. This spring sits inside a small hole in the lower receiver, directly underneath the buffer retainer, pushing upward on the retainer to hold it in the correct position to engage the front face of the buffer. When the upper and lower are separated, this spring keeps the buffer retainer up, blocking the buffer from shooting out of the buffer tube under pressure from the buffer spring. When the upper is closed, the bolt carrier pushes the buffer back slightly, depressing the retainer, but the spring keeps tension on the retainer so it instantly snaps back up when the bolt carrier is removed or the rifle is broken open. Without this spring, or with a weak, kinked, or corroded spring, your buffer retainer will not stay up — your buffer and action spring will launch out of the buffer tube every time you open the rifle, making maintenance frustrating and risking loss or damage to components, and in severe cases can cause the buffer to interfere with bolt carrier movement.

This mil-spec replacement spring is wound to the exact wire diameter, free length, and coil count to provide the correct spring rate for positive buffer retainer function. Made from high-quality tempered spring steel with a corrosion-resistant finish, it maintains its tension even after long periods under compression and will not take a set, flatten, or weaken. It is compatible with all standard AR-15, M4, M16, and AR-10 lower receivers using standard buffer retainers, including forged, billet, and 80% lowers. Whether you are finishing a lower build, replacing a lost spring that launched during buffer tube installation, or stocking your armorer’s bench with essential LPK spares, this spring restores correct, reliable buffer retention.

WHY CHOOSE THIS BUFFER RETAINER SPRING

The small spring that saves you from launching your buffer across the room.

1. Mil-Spec Spring Rate for Positive Buffer Retainer Lift and Buffer Capture: The buffer retainer spring’s job is to push the buffer retainer up into the buffer tube’s path. The retainer itself is a small cylindrical part with a lip that catches the front of the buffer. This spring provides the upward force. If the spring is too weak, the retainer will not pop up reliably — your buffer will slip past it and launch out when you break open the action. If the spring is too strong, it puts excessive pressure on the retainer, causing premature wear on the buffer face and making the retainer difficult to depress for buffer removal. This spring is engineered with the exact mil-spec wire gauge, coil count, and free length to deliver the ideal pressure: firm enough to hold the buffer securely when the rifle is open, yet light enough to allow the retainer to depress smoothly when the bolt carrier is installed and the rifle is closed. The coils are evenly spaced and concentric for smooth compression inside the receiver channel without binding, tilting, or kinking. The spring rate is consistent from batch to batch, so your buffer retainer functions exactly as designed — snapping up instantly after the bolt carrier clears it.

2. Tempered Spring Steel with Corrosion Resistance for Long Service Life: Unlike generic hardware store springs made from soft wire that compresses flat after a few months under load, this buffer retainer spring is made from properly tempered spring steel heat-treated for memory and elasticity. It is designed to stay under compression inside the lower receiver for years without taking a permanent set or losing tension. The finish is corrosion-resistant, protecting against moisture, gun oils, and cleaning solvents that pool in the buffer retainer hole — an area that collects carbon and residue from the buffer tube. The ends are cleanly finished to prevent the spring from digging into the receiver or the retainer and to ensure straight, even compression. The spring maintains its free length and rate through thousands of open/close cycles, temperature changes, and field use. This is a true mil-spec duty-grade spring built for defense, duty, and high-round-count rifles, not a soft aftermarket substitute that will weaken and cause your buffer to launch at the worst moment. Built to last the life of your lower receiver.

3. Critical Spare for Lower Builds and Drop-In Installation: The buffer retainer and its spring are infamous among AR builders as one of the most commonly launched parts during assembly — when you install the buffer tube, you must hold the retainer down while threading the tube over it, and if your hand slips, the spring launches the retainer across the room. That is why experienced builders keep spares of both. This spring is a direct drop-in replacement for any standard AR-15 LPK. Installation: drop this spring into the small hole in the lower receiver just forward of the buffer tube threads, place your buffer retainer on top of it with the lip facing toward the center of the receiver, depress the retainer, and thread your buffer tube over it until the tube lip captures the retainer, leaving just the tip protruding. No fitting or gunsmithing required. Compatible with all standard AR-15, M4, M16, and AR-10 lowers that use mil-spec buffer retainers. Whether you lost your spring, are assembling a stripped lower, or stocking your bench, this spring ensures your buffer stays captured.
