What’s the real M16 vs. AR15 BCG difference? They look the same at first glance, but one runs better in your AR-15. Here’s the full breakdown of weight, function, and reliability that Google won’t show you clearly.

What is the physical difference between M16 and AR-15 BCG?

It’s all in the back. An M16 Full-Auto BCG has a full-shroud, full-mass rear with two long equal lips at the bottom. That bottom lip is what trips the auto-sear in a real M16. An AR-15 semi BCG is shaved/cut down at the rear to remove that trip surface. The second difference is the firing pin shroud. M16 BCGs have a fully shrouded firing pin — the pin collar is protected. Old SP1 semi carriers were unshrouded, exposing the firing pin.

Is the M16 BCG heavier?

Yes, slightly, but it matters. An M16 Full-Auto BCG weighs ∼11.5-11.6 oz. An AR-15 semi BCG weighs ∼11.0-11.2 oz. That extra ∼0.5 oz of mass slows the carrier down. In an over-gassed AR-15 carbine, that slower speed = less violent recoil, better extraction, and less wear on your bolt lugs. It’s like going from an H1 to an H2 buffer, but in the carrier itself.

Does the M16 BCG run more reliably in a semi-auto AR-15?

100%. This is why every top-tier company — BCM, Daniel Defense, Colt — only ships M16 profile BCGs now, even in semi-auto guns. The extra weight helps with chambering when dirty, helps strip rounds from a full mag, and keeps the bolt locked longer so pressure drops before extraction. Guys who say “full-auto BCGs run better” are right. The semi BCG is a 1970s ATF compliance idea that hurts function.

Can I use an AR-15 semi BCG with a binary trigger?

You shouldn’t. Fostech Echo Sport and Franklin Armory binary triggers REQUIRE an M16 full-auto BCG. Binary triggers fire on pull AND release. They need the full mass and full rear trip to reset the second disconnector. With a lightweight semi BCG, you get light primer strikes, failure to reset, and that annoying dead trigger on release. Fix it by switching to a PTI M16 FA BCG.

Which one should you buy?

If you want MIL-SPEC reliability, smoother recoil, and future-proofing for binary triggers in the M16 vs AR15 BCG debate — the M16 Full-Auto BCG wins every time. There is no downside to running full-mass.

The PTI M16 Full-Auto 5.56 BCG is full-mass, 8620 carrier, 9310 bolt, MPI-tested, chrome-lined, and properly staked. The fix for over-gassing and binary failures.
