Description

OVERVIEW – ESSENTIAL COMPRESSION SPRING FOR POSITIVE SAFE / FIRE SELECTOR RETENTION

The AR-15 LPK Safety Selector Detent Spring is the small compression spring that powers your safety selector detent, providing the upward pressure that locks your safety selector firmly in Safe and Fire positions. This spring lives inside a channel in your pistol grip, sitting under the safety selector detent, pushing the detent up into the lower receiver and into engagement with the detent grooves machined into the bottom of the safety selector drum. When you rotate the safety from Safe to Fire, you compress this spring as the detent is forced down out of one groove, and when the next groove aligns, the spring snaps the detent up into it with a crisp, audible, and tactile click. This is what gives your AR-15 its distinct Safe/Fire clicks and what prevents the safety from drifting between positions under recoil, handling, vibration, or movement. Without this spring, or with a weak, kinked, or shortened spring, your safety selector detent has no upward force — your selector will spin freely with no detent, float between Safe and Fire, and can unintentionally move off Safe, creating an extremely dangerous condition where the rifle may fire when you believe it is on Safe.

This is a mil-spec replacement spring, wound to the exact wire diameter, free length, coil count, and spring rate to deliver the correct pressure for positive safety retention. Made from high-quality tempered spring steel with a corrosion-resistant finish, it maintains its tension even after years under compression inside the grip and will not take a set, flatten, or weaken. It is compatible with all standard AR-15, M4, M16, and AR-10 lower receivers using standard safety selector detents and grips, including A2, MOE, BCM, B5, Magpul, and most aftermarket grips with the standard detent spring hole, as well as forged, billet, and 80% lowers. Whether you are finishing a stripped lower build, replacing a spring that launched across the room when you removed your pistol grip, or stocking your armorer’s bench with essential LPK spares, this spring restores correct, reliable safety function.

WHY CHOOSE THIS SAFETY SELECTOR DETENT SPRING

The small spring that keeps your rifle actually on Safe.

1. Mil-Spec Spring Rate for Crisp Safe / Fire Clicks and Secure Retention: The safety detent spring’s job is deceptively critical — it must provide enough force to hold the safety selector detent firmly in the selector’s grooves, preventing drift, yet not so much force that the selector becomes stiff, gritty, and difficult to rotate. If the spring is too weak, the safety will feel mushy, have indistinct clicks, and can slip from Safe to Fire under recoil — a catastrophic failure you cannot tolerate in a duty or defense rifle. If too strong, the selector becomes hard to rotate with your thumb, causing missed safety manipulations under stress and premature wear on the selector grooves. This spring is engineered with the exact mil-spec wire gauge, coil count, and free length to deliver the ideal pressure: firm enough for positive, audible Safe/Fire clicks and secure retention in each position, yet smooth enough for easy thumb operation when you intentionally switch modes. The coils are evenly spaced and concentric for smooth compression inside the pistol grip channel without binding, tilting, or kinking. The spring rate is consistent from batch to batch, so your safety feels exactly as designed — snapping crisply into Safe and Fire with positive engagement you can feel and hear, even wearing gloves.

2. Tempered Spring Steel with Corrosion Resistance for Lifetime Under Compression: Unlike generic springs made from soft wire that compress flat after a few months inside the grip, this safety detent spring is made from properly tempered spring steel heat-treated for memory and elasticity. It is specifically designed to stay under compression inside the pistol grip for years — even decades — without taking a permanent set or losing tension. This is crucial because your rifle may sit in a safe for months with the grip installed, and the spring must still provide full pressure when you need it. The corrosion-resistant finish protects against moisture, gun oils, sweat, and cleaning solvents that pool in the grip screw hole and detent channel — an area that is rarely cleaned and traps residue. The ends are cleanly finished to sit squarely on the bottom of the grip channel and on the base of the detent, ensuring straight, even compression without digging into the polymer or aluminum grip. This spring maintains its free length and rate through thousands of selector rotations, temperature changes from freezing to desert heat, and years of field use. This is a true mil-spec duty-grade spring built for defense, duty, and high-round-count rifles, not a soft aftermarket substitute that will weaken and cause your safety to float.

3. The #1 Lost Spring During Grip Changes – Essential LPK Spare for Every Build: If you have ever changed an AR-15 pistol grip, you know this spring — it lives inside the grip itself, held in only by the grip’s contact with the lower receiver, and the instant you pull the grip off, this spring and the detent launch out and vanish into carpet, grass, or garage floor cracks. It is the single most commonly lost part in any AR lower build, alongside the safety detent itself. That is why every experienced builder and armorer keeps a handful of these springs in their parts bin — they know they will need one eventually. This spring is a direct drop-in replacement: place it into the small hole in the top of your pistol grip, place the safety selector detent on top of it with the pointed tip up, and carefully align the grip with the lower receiver while keeping the spring compressed, then install and torque your grip screw. No fitting, no gunsmithing, just standard installation. Compatible with all standard AR-15 / M4 / M16 / AR-10 lowers using mil-spec safety detent systems and all standard grips with the detent spring hole. Whether you lost yours, are building an 80% lower, or stocking your bench, this spring restores proper safety retention and crisp Safe/Fire function.
