Is PTI M16 Full-Auto BCG Legal for AR-15 & Why You Need One?

Is it legal in an AR-15?

Yes, 100% legal. ATF has confirmed in multiple letters that an M16 BCG alone does NOT convert a semi-auto to full-auto. It has no auto-sear. It is legal to buy, own, and use in your AR-15. Nearly all quality ARs now ship with an M16-profile carrier from the factory. The semi-auto BCG is actually the outdated version.

What does an M16 Full-Auto BCG do? What is the difference?

Two physical differences. First, the back of the carrier has full, long lips on top and bottom — the bottom lip trips the auto-sear in a real M16. A semi BCG is cut/shaved at the back. Second, it’s heavier. An M16 BCG is about 11.6oz vs 11.2oz for semi. That extra mass + shrouded firing pin gives you smoother cycling, better lock-up, and less wear on your firing pin collar. It runs softer, especially in over-gassed carbine guns.

Why do you need an M16 BCG? Can’t I use a semi BCG?

You can, but you shouldn’t. For standard shooting, the heavier M16 carrier reduces recoil, improves chambering, and helps with extraction. For binary triggers like the Fostech Echo Sport or Franklin BFSIII, it is REQUIRED. Binary triggers use the carrier’s full mass to reset the second sear. With a semi BCG, your Echo will fail to reset, jam, or go dead on the second shot. That “not resetting” issue? 90% is a semi BCG.
