Description
OVERVIEW – PRECISION DETENT FOR SECURE FRONT PIVOT PIN RETENTION AND TAKEDOWN
The AR-15 LPK Pivot Pin Detent is the small, pointed steel detent that locks your front pivot pin in its closed and open positions, providing the positive click that keeps your upper and lower receivers securely joined and allows quick takedown for cleaning and maintenance. This detent lives inside a small blind hole on the right side of the front of the lower receiver, sitting on top of the pivot pin detent spring, with its pointed tip engaging the detent grooves machined into the front pivot pin itself. When the pivot pin is pushed fully in to join the upper and lower, the pointed tip snaps into the pivot pin’s retention groove, locking the pin in the closed position with a positive click, preventing the pin from walking out under recoil and vibration. When you pull the pivot pin out to the takedown position to pivot the upper open, the detent snaps into the second groove on the pivot pin, holding the pin out in the open position so it does not fall out completely and get lost in the field. Without this detent, or with a worn, flat-tipped, or incorrect detent, your pivot pin will have no retention — it will walk out under recoil, the upper and lower will separate unexpectedly, the pin will fall out and be lost, and you will have no positive lock for takedown and reassembly.
This is a mil-spec replacement detent, precision-machined from hardened steel with a sharp, concentric pointed tip and flanged base for correct engagement with the pivot pin grooves and the detent spring. The point is ground to an exact angle and concentricity to seat fully into the pivot pin detent grooves with minimal wear and positive retention, while the body diameter is held to mil-spec tolerance for a free-sliding fit inside the detent channel without binding or excessive play that causes rattle. Finished with corrosion-resistant treatment for smooth operation and rust protection. Compatible with all standard AR-15, M4, M16, and AR-10 lower receivers using mil-spec pivot pin assemblies, including forged, billet, and 80% lowers. Whether you are finishing a stripped lower, replacing a detent that launched across the room during pivot pin installation, or stocking your armorer’s bench with the most commonly lost part in the entire AR platform, this detent restores correct pivot pin retention and positive takedown function.
WHY CHOOSE THIS PIVOT PIN DETENT
The tiny pointed pin that decides whether your pivot pin stays in or falls out in the field.
1. Sharp, Concentric Point for Positive Click Engagement with Pivot Pin Grooves: The pivot pin detent’s point is the entire interface that retains the pivot pin — if the point is dull, flat, off-center, or worn, it will not seat fully into the pivot pin’s detent grooves, causing weak retention, no click, and a pivot pin that walks out. Cheap, poorly ground detents have blunt or eccentric points that skip over the grooves instead of snapping into them, resulting in mushy, indistinct pivot pin operation with no positive lock. This detent features a precision-ground, sharp, concentric point, held to an exact angle and tip radius to match the pivot pin detent grooves. When the pivot pin is pushed in or pulled out, the point drops positively into the groove with an audible and tactile click, locking the pin securely in place — fully in for shooting, partially out for upper pivoting — without walking, backing out, or rattling under recoil. The point geometry ensures the detent can move up and down smoothly as the pivot pin slides past, with low friction and no digging or gouging that causes gritty pivot pin operation. The flanged base provides a large, stable bearing surface for the pivot pin detent spring, keeping the spring centered and preventing it from kinking or walking out of the channel during installation and operation. The body diameter is held to mil-spec tolerance for a free-sliding fit in the detent channel — tight enough to prevent rattle and tilting that causes binding, loose enough to slide freely without sticking even when fouled with carbon. The result is a pivot pin that moves with smooth, positive resistance and locks with a crisp click in both positions, giving you confidence that your upper and lower will stay joined under heavy recoil and that your pivot pin will stay captured when you open the upper.
2. Hardened Steel with Corrosion Resistance for Duty-Grade Durability: The pivot pin detent channel is a small blind hole that collects carbon fouling, gun oils, cleaning solvents, sweat, and moisture that cause rust and binding. Soft, unhardened detents quickly develop wear flats on the point, losing their sharp profile and causing weak retention that allows the pivot pin to walk out — a critical failure in a defense or duty rifle where upper/lower separation during firing is catastrophic. This detent is machined from solid steel and heat-treated for hardness, ensuring the pointed tip maintains its sharp geometry and does not flatten, mushroom, or develop burrs after thousands of pivot pin manipulations. The hardened surface resists wear from constant contact with the hardened pivot pin, maintaining positive retention for the life of the rifle. The corrosion-resistant finish prevents rust that causes the detent to stick inside the channel — a common cause of pivot pins that will not move, require excessive force to pull, or have no click because the detent is frozen down in its hole. The detent is designed to slide freely in the receiver channel even when fouled with carbon, ensuring reliable pivot pin retention and takedown in adverse conditions — cold, desert dust, rain, and high-round-count firing. This is a true duty-grade detent built for rifles that must stay together under recoil and allow fast takedown when needed, not a soft import part that will wear out and cause your pivot pin to fall out.
3. The #1 Most Lost Part in Entire AR Build – Essential LPK Spare for Every Builder: Installing the front pivot pin is notoriously the most frustrating job in an AR lower build — the standard method without a special tool requires you to insert the pivot pin detent spring into the small hole on the front right side of the lower, place this tiny pointed detent on top of the spring, hold a razor blade or 1/16 punch to keep the detent compressed while you slide the pivot pin over it, and hope the detent does not launch across the room. It is extremely common for this detent and its spring to shoot out, disappear into carpet, and be lost permanently during this process, especially for first-time builders. Even experienced armorers dread this step and keep multiple spares in their parts bin because they know they will launch one eventually. This detent is a direct drop-in replacement: insert detent spring into the front detent hole, place this detent pointed tip out on top of the spring, compress with a pivot pin installation tool or razor blade, and slide the pivot pin over it until the detent clicks into the groove. No fitting or gunsmithing required. Compatible with all standard AR-15 / M4 / M16 / AR-10 lowers using a mil-spec pivot pin system. Whether you lost yours, are building multiple 80% lowers, or stocking your bench with the part that always disappears, this detent restores correct pivot pin retention and positive takedown function.
