Description

OVERVIEW – CRITICAL DETENT FOR POSITIVE SAFE / FIRE SELECTOR FUNCTION

The AR-15 LPK Safety Selector Detent is the small, pointed detent that gives your safety selector its distinct clicks and holds it securely in Safe and Fire positions. This detent sits inside a hole in the lower receiver under the safety selector, pushed upward by the safety selector detent spring which is housed inside the pistol grip. The pointed tip of this detent engages with the detent grooves machined into the bottom of the safety selector drum, providing the tactile detent that locks the selector in each position. When you rotate the selector from Safe to Fire, the detent drops into the Fire groove with a positive click, holding the selector firmly in place and preventing it from drifting between positions under recoil, handling, or vibration. Without this detent, or with a worn detent that has a flattened tip, your safety selector will have no positive stops — it will spin freely, float between Safe and Fire, and can unintentionally move off Safe, creating an extremely dangerous condition where the rifle may fire when you believe it is on Safe.

This is a mil-spec replacement detent, precision machined from solid hardened steel with a sharp, conical pointed tip ground to the correct angle for smooth engagement with safety selector detent grooves. The finish is black oxide or natural steel for corrosion resistance and smooth operation inside the receiver channel. The body is sized to slide freely without binding, and the base is flat to sit squarely on the detent spring for consistent upward pressure. It is a direct drop-in replacement for all standard AR-15, M4, M16, and AR-10 lower receivers using mil-spec safety selectors and grips, including forged, billet, and 80% lowers. Whether you are building a stripped lower, replacing a lost detent that disappeared when you removed your pistol grip, or keeping essential spares in your armorer’s kit, this detent restores the crisp, audible, and tactile Safe/Fire clicks that define a proper AR-15 lower.

WHY CHOOSE THIS SAFETY SELECTOR DETENT

The tiny part that keeps your safety actually safe.

1. Precision Pointed Tip for Positive Safe / Fire Retention and Crisp Audible Click: The safety selector detent system is the only thing that holds your selector in Safe or Fire. The safety selector has two or three detent grooves (depending on whether it is a 90-degree or 45-degree selector) machined into its bottom. This detent’s pointed tip drops into those grooves under pressure from the grip spring. When you rotate the selector, the detent is forced down, compressing the spring, until the next groove aligns and the detent snaps up into it, creating the positive click you feel and hear. The angle and sharpness of the detent’s point are absolutely critical: if too blunt, the detent will not engage deeply enough and the selector will feel mushy and can drift between Safe and Fire under recoil; if too sharp or off-angle, it will dig into the grooves, making the selector stiff, gritty, and hard to rotate. This detent is ground to the exact mil-spec included angle for perfect engagement — crisp, distinct clicks in Safe and Fire, firm retention that prevents unintentional movement, yet smooth rotation with thumb pressure when you intentionally switch modes. The polished tip reduces friction and prevents premature wear on your safety selector grooves, ensuring long-term positive function.

2. Hardened Steel with Corrosion Resistance for Duty-Grade Reliability: This detent is machined from solid steel and heat-treated for hardness, ensuring the pointed tip will not flatten, mushroom, or wear down after thousands of selector rotations. Cheap, soft detents quickly develop a flat spot on the tip, resulting in weak retention, mushy clicks, and a safety that can slip off Safe — a life-threatening failure you cannot tolerate in a duty, defense, or competition rifle. This detent maintains its precise point geometry for the life of the rifle. The black oxide finish protects against corrosion from moisture, oils, and solvents that collect in the lower receiver’s detent channel and pistol grip area, ensuring smooth, rust-free operation. The cylindrical body is precision ground to the correct diameter to slide freely in the receiver channel without wobble, binding, or tilting. Every detent is inspected for tip angle and dimensional accuracy to ensure correct interface with all mil-spec and most aftermarket safety selectors. This is a true duty-grade detent built for rifles that must function flawlessly.

3. Most Commonly Lost LPK Part During Grip Changes – Essential Spare: If you have ever changed an AR-15 pistol grip, you know this detent — it lives inside the grip, held in by the grip itself, and the moment you pull the grip off, the detent and spring launch out and disappear into carpet, grass, or garage floor cracks. It is one of the top three most lost parts in any AR build, alongside the takedown detent and buffer retainer. That is why experienced builders and armorers keep multiple spares in their parts bin. Installation is simple: place the safety selector detent spring into the hole in the bottom of your pistol grip, place this detent on top of the spring with the pointed tip facing up, and carefully align the grip with the lower receiver while keeping the spring compressed, then bolt the grip on. The spring pressure will push the detent up into the receiver and into engagement with the safety selector. No fitting or special tools required beyond a standard armorer’s wrench for the grip screw. Compatible with all standard AR-15 / M4 / M16 / AR-10 lowers using mil-spec safety detents.
